  Unit 3e:
Magnets and Springs

Recognise that a force acts in a particular direction; describe the direction of forces between magnets or between a spring and someone compressing it; classify materials as magnetic or non magnetic and describe some uses of magnets.

Direct2U Lesson Plan
Children carry out an experiment to investigate the stretchiness of several different materials. They record their findings in a spreadsheet, which will automatically graph the results. This is available from www.thegrid.org.uk/learning/science/ks1-2/resources
The children then analyse and interpret the graphical data.
A writing frame for reporting on the experiment is supplied W35 Science Y3X.

Two activities from BBC websites are used to support learning about magnetism. These are:

A worksheet is supplied W60 Science Y3X. The children will learn that materials can be classified as magnetic and non-magnetic and that like poles of a magnet repel and unlike poles attract.
