Unit 1c:

Sorting and using Material

Name some common materials; make observations of these and of common objects, communicate these using terms eg bendy, rough, hard; suggest how to test an idea and say what the result of the test shows

Direct2U Lesson Plan
Children use an activity from the BBC Science Clips website which allows them to test a range of items to see whether they are waterproof and whether they will bend.

Word Processing
Exploring the properties of materials: what they are used for, what they are made of and how they work. Use a word processor with a word bank to present information.

Word Processing
Using a software package like Clicker, ask the children to combine words and pictures about materials and object.

Look at fabrics –which have are the most waterproof? Which have the most holes?

Use the microscope to investigate the 'weave' of different fabrics.

Look at smooth and rough items under the microscope.

ICT Link Unit 1C To show that information can be presented in a variety of forms and collected from a range of sources
Gather a collection of real objects that stimulate the senses, eg a lemon, a scented rose, a jar of Marmite, ‘talk’ on the radio, a bell, sandpaper. Prepare an image and word bank to represent these.

Show children the images of the objects and the words, perhaps using a whiteboard or data projector, and ask them to consider what the images can tell us that the object alone cannot, e.g. where it grows, how you use it, who eats it, where you might hear it.

Encourage children to consider that taste and smell cannot be conveyed by an image.

Ask the children to classify the objects according to which senses they stimulate.

Working in pairs, they make up sentences derived from handling the objects or looking at the images, e.g. This lemon is yellow, it tastes sour and feels smooth. Encourage the children to be creative in their descriptions, and share some of the best examples with the class.

Learning Outcome

  • recognise that information can be presented in a variety of forms and collected from a range of sources

ICT Link Unit 1D To describe objects using key words
Ask the children to collect a selection of classroom objects. Discuss what material they are made from. Ask children to suggest more items that can be made from each of the materials, eg glass - window, glasses.

Encourage the children to use a range of adjectives to describe the materials and objects, eg rough, smooth, and to identify common characteristics. They may need a word bank of adjectives and materials, eg smooth, shiny, rough, hard, soft, transparent, wood, rubber, to help them.

Using an interactive whiteboard or data projector, ask the children to sort the words for the objects into a table or lists according to their materials.

Learning Outcomes

  • recognise that objects have properties
  • provide information about objects by grouping them according to their materials
