What is a tsunami?

Tsunami is a series of huge waves that happen after an undersea disturbance, such as an earthquake or volcano eruption. The name comes from the Japanese word for harbor wave.

Facts about Tsunami

  • A tsunami can travel across the sea as fast as a jet airplane.
  • The waves can reach as high as 100 feet tall (30 1/2 meters).
