“Embedding ICT across the curriculum”

Kent Weather Watch ICT Art Project

Schools across Kent took part in an online Art Activity with Michele Gregson (ASK Art Advisory Teacher.) The task for the pupils was to create 2 and 3-D Artworks that showed what the weather feels like and not how it appears.

To promote creativity, the pupils were encouraged to make choices about which art materials (wood, plastics, man made and natural fabrics, charcoal, art, inks and paint) to use.

The pupils at Oaktree Primary
were filmed working with Michele Gregson.

Adopting this approach encouraged the pupils to:

  • Explore colour, texture, shape, form and space in natural and made objects.
  • Think about and respond to what they viewed, felt and touched in different ways.
  • Use their imagination to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings through the use of a widening range of materials.
  • Respect others' work and learn how to offer and receive constructive feedback and praise.
  • Be imaginative and make connections between different areas of learning.

Michele Gregson was filmed working with a group of Year 4 pupils at Oaktree Primary School, Ashford. During the day the pupils used a wide range of materials to represent different weather conditions. Following the “Activity Day” a twenty minute video showing the pupils working on their 2 and 3 D Art works was published on the “Weather Watch website together with instructions about the learning task for other schools to view.

The pupils use FlashMeeting Presenter
to view and discuss their own and others work.

Pupils taking part in the project from schools across Kent were then given three weeks to complete the assignment and post either photographs or videos of their art work on the Making the News website. The task completed, all the pupils, were then invited to take part in a FlashMeeting web conferencing session with Michele to review their work. During these sessions, which lasted 25 minutes, the pupils also had the opportunity to view Weather Art by famous artists (J.M.W. Turner and Jean Tinguely.) that was displayed on the screen using FlashMeeting Presenter.
