Young Musicians at Nonington Primary

Using voice recorders in the classroom

Music and ICT

Pupil using a voice recorderUsing ICT to review and improve our work

Class 3 at Nonington Primary will be taking part in the “Weather Watch On-Line Music Concert” on Tuesday 1st July. 2008.

Preparing for the concert

To help prepare for the event the pupils have already begun to compose their musical scores. Working in small groups they have recorded their ideas on paper and chosen their instruments.

The next step .....

They plan to add additional sounds and possibly voices to their work using Digital Voice Recorders.

What is a Digital Voice Recorder?
A digital voice recorder is a small hand-held device that is used to record voice. Simple to operate these portable devices also enable the pupils to playback and review their work. The devices also come with a USB lead so files can be downloaded and easily stored on a laptop or PC to enable the pupils to listen to their music wearing headphones.

Editing their composition

If they have time, they will upload the MP3 recording into Audacity. This free software will enable them to add additional sounds (layers) or make changes to the beat.

ICT is changing Music in the classroom

Pupils are beginning to download recordings of their own work and editing their music on the computer. They are having discussions with each other on how they can improve their compositions:

“Should we use hand bells what about adding a shaker there?”

Music in the classroom really is changing (even for our very young musicians) as pupils increasingly use ICT to explore the effect of combing different sounds.

Where can you buy a Digital Voice Recorder?

There are many different voice recorders available to help perform this task ranging in price from under £20 to £100. Click on the links below to view just a few.
